There is a biting cold outside this early morning. A quick run to the van told me it won't be a day for outside play today. It finally feels like winter.
Joel is with me this morning, sitting on my lap, jabbering on and on to his little toy horse. He is a devoted buddy. Every morning he's the first one up, eager to join me for my devotions. He likes to sit on my lap under an afghan sipping his milk while I read and enjoy my morning coffee. It makes for a pleasant start to the day.
The other kids are all still in bed. I'm giving them an early Christmas gift: a morning to sleep in. Later, we'll work on some school work and house work along with making some Christmas crafts. Hopefully, I'll have time to share some pictures on the blog.
Today I am praying for a peace filled day without rush and hurry. A day to leisurely drink in the holiday season and to celebrate life in this wonderul family. I pray that the children will catch the vision and enjoy one another and this special season. Fall upon us, Jesus, and fill us with delight in You this Christmas season.
The title does not reflect the fact that I will be writing something every day, but with a name like Baily, I couldn't resist it......

Holes. My kids enjoyed digging them in the backyard of our Pittsburgh home, and it drove me crazy. But today, I saw the most lovely hole. A large yellow back hoe was digging out the soil riddled with clay at the site of our new home. Finally, it has begun.
After many months of planning, the building of 104 Country Lane has started. The sides of the road were muddy but we walked back anyway to see the start of this building process. Along the way, Joel tumbled face forward into the mud. What a mess! His hands were covered as though in chocolate along with the front of his coat and pants. Tears trickled down his face as his little legs continued to carry him to the excavation site. The children and I stood their amazed. Even Joel stopped his crying and watched with great astonishment. The hole was immense...and it was beautiful. What a beautiful rainy day! It may in fact be my most favorite day this year. Thanks be to God!

We've already had our little outing this morning, a brisk walk to church for Visual Arts Camp. Isaiah should be busy sculpting something right now, and Nathaniel's fingers are probably placing mosaic tiles just so. The boys were very excited about his last week of camp.
The babies have their eyes glued to "Baby Jonah." They watch a video maybe three times a week, and this is their favorite. Their distraction has given me time to work on our weekly menu and write out a grocery list.
Eliza is playing alone in her room, maybe Barbies or dollies. She'll be my biggest helper when we head out to the store in a little while.
This evening, Dave and I are going to put on our dancing shoes. Having signed up for a Jitterbug class, we'll be dancing every Tuesday for the next six weeks. It should be fun. The weekly date will be such a highlight for me. Dave is truly my best friend and I love being with him. Tuesdays will be a day to look forward to.
Thank you, God, for a peaceful and slow morning. Give me the energy I need to carry through with all the details of the day. Help me to honor you with my every move.

Today is a sad day for me. My grandfather passed away, unexpectedly, in his sleep. It is hard to imagine him gone from this world.
Death makes me reflective. Thinking on things of the past. Evaluating things of the present. What do I remember about my loved one? What did I enjoy the most? How did others see him? And how will others remember me some day?
I'm grateful that my children had the privilege of knowing my grandpa. They enjoyed spending time with him, even during grouchy card games. Grandpa was always grandpa. He didn't try to be anything but himself. I loved his spaghetti and his soups. I have fond memories of riding around in his golf cart with him. And I love the story of him finishing a round of golf in his boxers. I was entertained by my grandpa. He always made me chuckle.
Today, my children and I will share our memories together. We'll talk about their visits and I'll share with them stories from the days of my youth. What a blessing to have a wonderful grandfather! He will certainly be missed.

It's been too long since I last posted. I enjoy trying to write a little each day, and I am shamed that I've been so lax about this habit lately. I can't even say that I've been too busy. Our summer has been lazy and wonderful: small day trips here and there, and day camp in the mornings, afternoons of book reading and an occasional dip in the local pool.
My focus this summer has been to rid our house of excess clutter and unneeded possessions. God continually places before me the verse in Matthew that harkens us to "not store up treasures on earth...but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven." Daily I pray that God would reveal to me what we can do without, what I should let go of. He gently reminds me that too many things require too much of my time and attention, and that I would be much happier if my time was spent enjoying my children, serving others, reading a good book, taking a walk.
My prayer today is that God would continue to take from me my desire to cling to things and to hold them too close to my heart. I pray that he would free me so that I might enjoy the work he has placed before me. Thanks be to God for the amazing victory!

Happy Birthday to my brother, Tom. What a wonderful day to celebrate. (My exclamation point key just stopped working. It's all periods all the time.)
Anyway, I hope my brother enjoys the blessings this day holds for him and that he knows the amazing love that Jesus has for him. Happy Birthday.

I am tired right now. Just tried to lay with Josh for a little nap. No success. He was all over the place, climbing, kicking, rolling. He's in his own room now, upset that we're not "cuddling" anymore.
The children are attending Bible camp this week at our church. They're learning all about Paul and the Roman Empire. The babies and I picked them up early so we could participate in their singing.
Our house is still not coming along. It's been a discouragement to me. My only hope lies in what Christ still wants to accomplish in and through us while we are here in Pittsburgh. Living in transition is not my easiest place but it looks like we'll still be around in the fall.
Well, I'm going to brew a little java and hope that I can rouse myself for my afternoon's duties.
Looking to Christ for strength.

We're in NYC enjoying time away together. It's awesome to have this little get away. So far, we've visited the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Ground Zero, the Metropolitan Museum and enjoyed watching the Pen's victory at a Steeler's Bar. What a great time we're having. I love the subway. Our hotel is decent, though we had to try three different rooms to finally get functional air conditioning. I thought Central Park was fabulous. New York has been a fun place to visit.
Tonight, I'm hoping to get out for some live music and dessert for my birthday. I love that I got to spend my birthday here alone with Dave. I always enjoy his company. It's been a great trip for us.
Thanks God for a wonderful birthday weekend!

Thought I'd write a quick entry for the day. Things here in Pittsburgh are sailing along...not exactly smoothly, but along. Sometimes with our children it feels like the need to instruct and correct them is endless. Recently, we've been doing a lot of correcting and it's tiresome and difficult work. It's hard to be consistent and to take time to work on their faults and sins.
I think of God and how he is so slow to anger. How he gently prods us along and disciplines us in his great love. I am thankful for his example of patience. I'm sure that I test him, challenge him, and even defy him sometimes. And yet, he patiently, lovingly, gently pulls me back to himself. He walks with me in the midst of difficult consequences all the while drawing me deeper into a knowledge of him and into a relationship with him. Thank you, Lord, for being the ultimate heavenly parent.

Today was our first homeschool evaluation. Isaiah turned nine this year, and the PA law required us to have our program evaluated at the end of our school year. We presented a number of samples and a list of resources used. Isaiah was also required to take the CAT test this year and to turn those results in. The evaluation was a joy. The evaluator was encouraging and reminded me that she was to make sure that "progress" occured in our program. She also commented that she'd never met a lazy homeschool parent. She believes that those who choose to educate at home are dedicated and committed to providing a good education for their children.
At the end of every year, I look back and wonder if I really did a good enough job with my children. There is always more that I could have done, always things I just didn't get to. But overall, I have seen my children grow and change this year. I've seen them advance academically. But most important, I have seen them grow in their walk with God. My greatest desire as a mother, is that I would see my children someday teach their children to know and love God. It's my deepest desire for them. Sometimes in the bustle of doing math, reading, spelling, etc., I can easily lose sight of my primary goal to train up my children in the way of scripture and to show them each day the great love that our Savior Jesus has for them. Help me not to be distracted, Lord. Keep my eyes fixed on you and help me direct my children toward you.

What a different morning I'm having already! Praise the Lord. I am so glad that one constant in life is that, in fact, nothing remains the same forever.
Last night, I had a wonderful night of sleep, no interruptions, cool air. I had a solid and deep sleep. It was fabulous. It's amazing how good rest makes the day even look different.
In a little while, we'll be heading off to the Science Center. We'll be meeting Aunt Cari and her family there along with some friends from Waynesburg. I've yet to pack our lunch and things, so I'll need to be moving on soon.
My littlest ones are already up for the day. They've been waking when I do around 6:30, so I haven't had many mornings alone recently. This morning, they are playing delightfully together. Their little chatter is fun to observe. They are saying so many things.
Joel is sitting here next to me trying to type with me. Every few letters that I type, he adds numbers from the number pad. His little fingers are moving quickly like mine. I can hardly keep up with the little Techy.
Well, off to pack lunches. Blessings to you this day!

Some days the constant barrage of questions and crying exhaust me. I can't explain why some days I'm more susceptible than others to a momentary breakdown, but it happens. Today is that kind of day.
The babies have been fussier than usual. Lots of tears and a lack of interest in toys and an increased interest in stuff they just shouldn't have seems to characterize them right now. The entire time they are awake, I feel like I'm playing defense. My body is filled with tension from being on guard all day long. I really need to get into a yoga class or something.
The babies are not the only ones shedding tears today. My eyes have been filled many times today. I sense great release when finally I can let them go. Finallyy, I am able to confess that I am simply unable to hold it all together. I alone am unable to muster the physical strength needed to chase down my two little ones or to race them to the bathroom door to close it before they enjoy a quick play in the toilet. I alone am unable to quiet the noise that fills the air around me and the mental stress that accompanies life with five sweet little ones. My tears are a prayer to the Lord, whom I know is able. He is able to do all things. Today, Lord, I pray that in my weakness you will be strong. Shine through me. Move in me. Touch me and make me whole. I need You. Thank you, Lord, for your kindness to me.

It has been a few days since Grandma's funeral. I've been thinking about her a lot, especially thinking about the model she was for me as a mom. Like Grandma, I really enjoy having a large family and I even look forward to many grandchildren. There are many trials and challenges that come with a big brood, but the blessings are far greater. Each one of our little Bailys adds much to our home. I'm thankful for each one.
My grandmother did a wonderful job of being available for us. She was always around, and that was a comfort to me. I knew that if I got sick and my mom was had to work, Grandma would be home and she would take care of me. When we were at her house playing, I knew that if I needed anything at all, Grandma would be there to help me. I felt free to play all day in the comfort of her presence. She was there, available, and that meant a lot.
For Grandma, children were never an intrusion or annoyance. She was glad we were with her: she valued us. She got pleasure from serving us, making us meals, mending our things, making us play dough. She wasn't so busy with the things of this world, that she had no time for us. On the contrary, her family was her priority and she willingly gave of herself. She made us feel important.
She include me in whatever she was doing. I have her to thank for knowing how to play solitaire and bingo. I remember sitting with her as she taught me how search for words and circle them. She sewed with me. I remember her making me my most favorite doll dress for my cabbage patch kid. She put that little dress together in no time and it was just as I described to her.
I pray that God helps me to stop from my busyness and take time to play with my kids, to sit on the couch or at the table and teach them how to do word searches and crosswords. I want to stop what I'm doing to really listen to my kids and to help them with whatever important thing they have on their mind. I want to include them in the work I'm doing, and not put them off because their "help" is innefficient and often messy.
It's especially in the kitchen that I think of Grandma. Every time I make bread with my kids, I tell them about her and how she always let me help her knead her dough and how good that bread tasted with butter and jelly. Using her rolling pin to make pie crust or cookies, I can almost see her rolling something out on her kitchen table. I always remind the kids where that rolling pin came from. When I make a batch of playdough, I remember sitting at her table dumping out blue or green dough from the old butter tub she stored it in. I remember her standing in her apron cooking or doing dishes, while I sat there in my own play world, making little dough people or dough pizzas. I'm glad I have such strong memories of her and that I can share those with my children.
Thank you, Grandma, for having time, time to invest in me, time to talk to me, time to play with me. I pray that the imprint you made on my life will carry on to my children, their children, their grandchildren, and beyond. I pray that your legacy with live on for decades to come.

Today, I walked with my older three children to our church, Eastminster Presbyterian Church. This weekend is our annual rummage sale, so after our schoolwork was completed, we walked over to help sort, move, stack, unload, and arrange all the goodies that people have donated for the sale. Then the kids picked out a few treats for themselves and bought them for pennies. I was proud of the diligent work the kids put forth.
On our walk over, we ran into our friend, Mr. Dorn at Home Depot. The boys watched him work his saw on an old pallet. After we finished our work, we visited Vento's Pizza, enjoyed a hot slice, and said "hello" to our friend, Shawn.
This is one of the things I love about living here. I love running into people we know and love. It is a delight to stop and chat with our friends and build relationships with our church family.
I also love living close enough to walk. We walk to church, to the library, to the pizza shop, to Goodwill, to Grandma's office, to the coffee shop, to piano lessons... We love getting out on a sunny day and going someplace interesting. This is one thing about the city I will remember with joy and one thing that I'm sure I'll miss dearly.
This has been a wonderful place for our family to live. Thank you, God, for such a wonderful experience.
(P.S. For those of you wondering, next week I'm planning on writing about the things I'm looking forward to in the country. I'm able to delight in many places!)

This morning when I came downstairs for my hour of solitude, I opened the back door to let a little fresh air in. Now that all the blighted buildings are gone from our corner, I can see the street with its passing cars. There weren't a ton of cars, but enough to make me think about all the different people going about their daily lives. Watching the cars, I started to reflect on those things I like most about city living. I often hear negative comments on city life, so I thought I'd share with you over the next week the things I have loved about our life in Pittsburgh.
One of the things I like most is having so many different types of people around. David and I enjoy company, and it is not uncommon for several people to drop by our house daily. My children have grown up expecting a variety of people at our door and our dinner table, people who happened by and were invited in to spend time with us or invited to join us for a meal. My children have had the privilege of knowing people young and old, black and white, rich and poor, and having entertained them all in home for all kinds of occasions.
This past week, my children were in our back yard playing with a few neighborhood kids. I called my brood inside for dinner, and as they came to the door, they pulled me aside to ask in a whispered voice, "Can we invite Rosie and VJ to join us for dinner?" At first, my internal reaction was, "Definitely not! Dad is out of town tonight, and I'm already tired. I'm not sure I made enough food. No way!" But then, a little voice in my mind reminded me that this is what we have taught our children. That in a moments notice, our table is available to any of our friends that happen to drop in or be around. As we added to plates to the table, I rejoiced that my children were living out what we have taught them it means to be "Pittsburgh Bailys."
This is one of the things I love most about the city. People. All sorts, shapes, sizes. All different backgrounds and life stories. All created by God and loved by Him. And I love that they drop by our house and share our lives.

What a lovely day it is turning out to be! The sun is warming everything up! How exciting! My cold bones sure love the spring and summer heat!
The boys have been outside a little bit today, playing in the dirt with their little guys. Eliza plays along with them most of the time. She has a few girls that she adds to their imaginary world. The babies have been playing in the living room, puzzles, books, balls.
This afternoon, we'll read a little more about Russia. We are picking up some raspberries and peppermint tea to make a special Russian tea. Next week, our friends, the Burgess family, will join us for dinner. They've spent a year living in Russia and have many tales to tell.
We're also going to read about the tundra. I'm so thankful that I do not live there. God was gracious to put me here in the Eastern U.S. I love the seasons, and after the cold of winter, I am grateful for the warmth of the summer. Thanks be to God for the sunny day!
The boys have been outside a little bit today, playing in the dirt with their little guys. Eliza plays along with them most of the time. She has a few girls that she adds to their imaginary world. The babies have been playing in the living room, puzzles, books, balls.

What a beautiful morning! The sun is up and the sky isn't cloudy yet. I enjoy the start of the day. That's probably because I seem to be an optimist. Before the day begins, I'm usually full of ideas of things to do and hope of all that can be accomplished. Sometimes, my ambitions are realized and other times they are sorely crushed.
Today, I am hoping for a nicely paced day. We have our music lessons and a little school work. Isaiah should finish up math today and then we'll probably take a break from math for most of May. I think Isaiah is interested in learning to type, so we may spend some computer time each day doing that.
Today, I am hoping that the weather is kind enough to let us take a trash pick- up walk in honor of earth day. Armed with plastic bags, I hope we can make our street and alley look a little more beautiful. We might also make a craft with some of the litter we retrieve.
Today, I am praying the babies take a good nap. They've been chatterboxes the last couple of days, playing and talking instead of sleeping! I hope we can wear them out and that they will get a good rest this afternoon.
Today, I am hopeful that our day will please God and that we'll grow closer to him by learning to honor one another above ourselves. Bless us, Lord, and help us to serve you.

Right now my skin is crawling from all the cleaning I've been doing in the basement. The dust is immense. Gross!
Our church holds its annual rummage sale next weekend, and I am anxious to rid our home of all those unused things that have been lying around. I've already taken two van loads of things. Tomorrow, I plan to take yet one more load. Perhaps I'll ask Dave if he can haul the paper that we need to recycle to the bin.
My household help is about to have her baby in the next few weeks. I am so excited to meet her little one, but also sad to see her leave us soon. Caroline has been incredibly helpful. Before her final day, I hope to tie up some loose ends with cleaning and organizing.
For today, I am stopping. I could go on and on in the basement, but I think it's wise to take a break. I've worked for four or so hours and I need a little time to fold laundry. If it's not one thing, it's another. Help me to wisely use my time today, Lord. Direct my actions and thoughts.

Quickly, I'll post a little something for the day. The babies are already chattering in their beds and I'll need to tend to them soon. The day is in full swing. Thankfully, I awoke at 6:30 and started black beans on the stove top and filled the dishwasher with last nights mugs and cups from our small group meeting. Then, on to my quiet time of reading. So far, a good pace for the day.
I realized this morning that in only five weeks, we can bring a close to this "school year". At least the formal work that I feel the children need to accomplish. I am looking forward to many days of informal learning, inquiring, investigating. Certainly, the children are glad that the year is tapering to a slower pace.
This week, we start our study of Russia. After that, it's two weeks of Australia and then a week of Antarctica. We'll keep up with our spelling, reading and grammar for the next five weeks. Also, we'll use the time to solidify our math facts. Hopefully, we'll enjoy a good deal of nature study too. I love the outdoors. It's so much easier to get out when you don't have to put on hats, gloves, boots. We'll do a little hiking and a lot of observing. I can hardly wait.
On this rainy day, we'll plug along with our indoor studies. Well, off to get the two tiniest Bailys. Blessings on your day!

What a glorious day! The sunshine sure brings health to the spirit! Early in the afternoon, we took a wonderful nature walk over to the seminary. Instead of finding all kinds of neat nature to look at, we also ran into several friends. Today was the Pittsburgh Presbytery meeting held at the Seminary. I got to touch base with friends I hadn't seen for a long time!
We were on a mushroom hunt, but alas, no mushrooms to be found. We did find moss and some other fungi that grows on trees. We collected a few samples to explore at home. When we returned, the babies went down for their nap and the boys and I read our latest read aloud. Then around 3 p.m., we headed back outdoors. Working on the front garden, I helped the children identify young plants. We transplanted some of our black eyed Susans to the backyard, and we noted how robust our tulips are. I can hardly wait for their blooms. We also potted some pansies in pots, and left a mess from weeding on the sidewalk. Maybe I'll tend to that when Dave gets home.
Tonight, we'll enjoy BBQ beef sands, sweet potato fries, and a veggie medley. At least Dave and I will enjoy it. We'll see about the kids.
Hoping for another glorious day tomorrow! I'm so glad God allows the sun to shine upon us. What a gift!

I'm coming out of the morning fog. Joel had a terrible night of sleep. After waking around 2 a.m. and crying for forty minutes or so, I finally brought him into bed with us. He was cute and cuddly, playing with my hair and snuggling close. Then he head butted me. He didn't mean to, but it was almost four in the morning, so I put him back in his bed. He's still snoozing. I'm still wishing I was snoozing.
Today we are going to have a very routine day. It's rainy, so the children will probably be inside all day. I hope they're not too squirrelly! I'd hoped to get up a little earlier and get some things done. Instead, I got up around 6:40, read my Bible, and fell over on the couch "praying". I did actually pray a little, but I rested in the Lord quite a bit as well.
Lord, the day belongs to You. Make it what you want it to be. Teach my children to love and fear You.

My dear husband made sure that I got up by 6:30 today. I am greatful for his encouragement. Last week, I had quite the sleeping in slump. When I have an hour to myself in the morning, it helps to center me for the day. I have greater peace and patience.
The babies are battling a little cold. Grumpy! That would be a good way to describe their disposition. Needy! Another good word. Whiny! That sums them up for at least yesterday. They had an early bedtime, and I am hopeful they will feel better today.
Today we'll be working through some math and grammar and spending time exploring Japan. Last night we indulged in mochi, a Japanese ice cream desert. Tasty! We're also finishing a biography about Gladys Aylward. I have requested the Ingrid Bergman film the Inn of Six Happinesses from Netflix. The film depicts Gladys' work in China. We can't wait to watch it.
Praying that God blesses you today and that He equips us for the work He places before us.

Currently, our family is reading about the life of Gladys Aylward. Amazing! A woman of small stature made enormous contributions as a missionary in China. The children and I are riveted by her book. It is inspiring to know that God can use a life of someone willing to completely commit themselves to him.
Next year, our family will journey through the 50 states, sometimes by van, sometimes by book. I'd love to drive out west. (Yes, I know I'm crazy considering the toddler twins.) I'm going to start visiting mapquest to see how crazy the idea really is.
I'm also starting to look for mission agencies that serve people in the U.S., so that we might be praying for them and possibly contribute to their work.
I pray that God would use each of us to do mighty things for His Kingdom. Lord, inspire my children and move them to faithfulness to You.

Relaxed. Enjoyable. Peaceful. That's the morning we've been sharing here at 508 N. Sheridan Ave. The kids awoke today to a surprise of Easter baskets hidden on the first floor. They couldn't believe it knowing that Easter is tomorrow, not today. Dave and I decided to try our basket tradition on Saturday this year and to leave Sunday as an unrushed morning of worshipping the Risen Lord.
The babies had an egg hunt in the living room. The delighted themselves with eggs filled with M&M's. Chocolatey drool ran down their chins and squeals erupted after they spotted each egg. They didn't like the peeps in their baskets, but they enjoyed the crackers with cheese. It was fun to see them partake in this yearly tradition.
Dave and I listened to quiet hymns. We watched our growing family. It's always about this age that I am again able to enjoy my family. I don't feel the same stress I did the first eighteen months. I am thankful to God for this.
I love days like this. I enjoy the unhurried pace, the time to be fully in the moment. Not all our days are blissful like this one. So, I will try to hold on to the feelings I shared with my family this day, when the busy, rushed days of the week greet us Monday morning. Thank you, Lord, for this beautiful day.

It's already 11:16 this Holy Good Friday. This morning, I read through the crucifixion in John and have been meditating on that. There are many things to think about when we ponder Christ's death. I am amazed at his sacrifice, his willingness to be beaten and to suffer great pain because of our sin.
This morning, I was bathing the babies and afterwards, as I was trying to encourage them to listen and stay out of the bathroom, I banged my side into the door knob. It smarted pretty good, and I'm sure I'll have a bruise from the incident. I looked down at them after my loud "Ow!", and said, "If you'd just obeyed, mommy wouldn't have gotten hurt." Then my mind jumped back to my morning reading. I thought, "If we'd just obeyed, he'd not have needed to suffer."
Lord, remind me to obey you. Holy Spirt, open my ears that I might always hear you and soften my heart that I might always respond.

Praise the Lord, I was able to get up by 6:30 today. My eyes were so heavy that it took me longer than usual to read my Bible. I just couldn't really concentrate on the words. Mornings for me are a wonderful blessing. I have found that just an hour of time alone before the kids wake for the day gives me mental stability. It affords me the ability to cope with the pressures of each day.
This week, Isaiah will take his first CAT test. He and a friend will take the test either Wednesday or Thursday. We are enjoying a modified week this week because of the test. At this point in our school year, Isaiah is almost finished with his math program. We are working extra hard at spelling. It seems to be the area we need to give most attention to. Having started back to school in August, we have less than 40 days to complete our school year by state standards. I am looking forward to the much needed break in June and July.
Last week, I received our school materials for next year. It is always a highlight for me! I love imagining all the learning that will take place. I love flipping through the materials. Next year, we'll be focusing on American history. Lots of field trips are in the works....Philadelphia, Williamsburg, Boston, maybe even a hike out west. We'll see!

It has been too long since I've had time to write and my internet has been functioning. I didn't realize just how much I enjoy jotting my thoughts and our comings and goings each day.
Things here are rolling smoothly right now. I thank God for his help in getting us to a peaceful place. Schooling has been moving along at a brisk pace and the boys are ahead of schedule in most of their subjects. Nathaniel finished both his reading and math programs already, and Isaiah is slated to finish math possibly next week. Math fact review will be our focus for the rest of our school year, along with some story problem practice.
As for geography, we're touring China currently. Caroline has been a wealth of information being that she has been to China numerous times and that she speaks Mandarin. Last night we had bang-bang chicken for dinner. The kids seemed to enjoy it. I'll try to post the recipe somewhere on the blog later in the week.

I can't believe it's been almost a week since I've journaled. This morning, I have yet to read my Bible or get ready for the day. I am sitting with the smell of brewing coffee wafting into the office as I type. I'm going to need a little pick me up already.
Joel slept poorly again. I brought him into bed with us, but even so, it was like a wrestling match. He kept kicking me and trying to play with my hair. He was extremely restless. I am praying that God helps him to quickly work through whatever it is that bothers him in the night.
Last night, our friend, Adam, joined us for dinner...sushi, again! The kids love rolling sushi and they love Mr. Adam. We haven't seen this dear friend for a year and a half. Catching up was a blessing. Adam is a fabulous artist. You can check out his work at http://adamgrossi.com.
Hope you meet God in your day today. I am already wondering how He's going to help me with patience and kindness. I'm tired and my self control will be wanting. I'm going to need a lot of help, Lord. Make my eyes aware of you and my ears sensitive to your voice.

Happy First Day of Spring! I can hardly believe it is finally here! It feels like quite an accomplishment to have made it through the long, cold winter!
Today we are celebrating the vernal equinox. Tonight we'll note the time of the sun's setting. Just last night, Nathaniel noted on his own accord that "this season has longer days." He can hardly believe that it is still light when we eat our dinner. I'm also thinking of starting a spring mural. Maybe we'll draw bare trees, then put buds and leaves on them when we notice they appear. We can cut out pictures of birds as we notice them returning. On a walk on Wednesday, we spotted a field full of robins. What a joy to see the little red breasts back in Pittsburgh!\
We are also expecting a visit from our friends, the Meadows today. The boys enjoy catching up with our former neighbors. Tomorrow, David and I are attending a homeschool conference. I can hardly wait to get my mitts on next years materials.
But for today, we will enjoy this beautiful day of warmth and sunshine. What a treat! I love this season!

6:30 seemed very early today. My body hungered for a little more rest. Joel woke early to provide me some company and keep me awake. Together, we read our Bibles. He eagerly flipped pages in his lift-the-flap Bible, and I continued my journey through Genesis. I was reading about God promising Abraham a son that would come through Sarah, his 90 year old wife. I would have laughed, too.
Nathaniel worked on a narration today about the tortoise and the hare. I'm going to try to publish it on the blog a bit later. He would love to create an audio version of his tale with music by his brother and voices done by him. Artistically motivated, that is my son Nathaniel.
Eliza started to read today, sounding out several three letter words. It is always a high for me when they start to make sense of letters on the page. Teaching them to read has been a highlight in my life.
Music lessons this afternoon still becken. Wednesday is our busy day. I'm hoping for a little peace in this whirlwind today, a few quiet moments and times that bring a smile to our faces.

Happy St. Patricks Day! I think that this morning I'll make green eggs for the clan. And, Happy Birthday to our dear friend, Kim!
I am sitting, very satisfied, in our newly arranged office. Through prayer and conviction, I was able to downsize the amount of furniture in the office and get rid of a ton of things! Decreasing the amount of stuff in our home is one of the most important things on my mind these days. I am trusting that God will help me to know what to keep and what to toss.
Last night, the babies slept well. What a blessing! It has been a while since I've had solid sleep. Little Joel is quite the night time rascal. Hopefully, the babes feel just as rested as I do.
Off to make green eggs!

I am sitting here with Eliza, and she is telling me that her "belly asturbs me." I think she's a little hungry, so I'll make this short.
David and I had a nice day together yesterday. We travelled to Canton to look at products for the house we are building. Yes, some of you may not know it, but Dave and I are planning a move to Waynesburg. It wasn't something I ever thought we would do, but after much prayer and discussion, we believe it is what God is calling us to.
As we prepare, our emotions are running rampant. There are many things we will miss and at the same time, many things we can look forward to. David had a wonderful experience growing up out in the country and we are certain our children will enjoy that as well. Living farther from my mom and Hannah is a difficulty that often brings tears in our home. We are taking a leap of faith in this move and trusting God knows what each of us needs.
Well, I need to help an "asturbed belly". I'm off!

Restless is a good word for me today. It's how I feel deep inside. I don't feel settled right now in several areas: parentally, spiritually, physically. With an impending move and plans to make, I don't always know how to live in the present. My mind is in two places, here and there, today and tomorrow. I need some divine peace right now. Spirit, please blow your gentle peace upon us today.

The chill in the air has me shivering this afternoon. The babies are still sleeping, while the others are enjoying the backyard. I have a moment alone.
I enjoy the quietness when I can catch it. Even for a moment. Peace settles over me when everything is still. I imagine the Holy Spirit descending on me. Now that I am still He can wash over me.
Today has been less than a peaceful day with older children testing all boundaries and the babies waking before the sun rose. I feel a little sleepy now, though rather than shut my eyes for a few moments, I intend to delve into my latest book. I enjoy this time for me. Thank you, God, for this rare treat.

I feel a little sleepy now, though rather than shut my eyes for a few moments, I intend to delve into my latest book. I enjoy this time for me. Thank you, God, for this rare treat.

I am running a little behind my own schedule this morning, but I wanted to take a moment to write. My little ones are finally recovered, almost fully. It was a delight yesterday to see them playing together again. At one point, they were even climbing the living room chair and sliding over the back of it. I was blessed by their giggles. Good health is so precious.
Today we are going to finish our camel lapbooks and do a little grammar and spelling work along with our daily math work. I am hoping we can get outside for some fresh air. I'd love to taka a little walk. Maybe we'll journey over to the public library. I have a novel I want to start this weekend. (I love Amish novels. I think I enjoy them so much, because of the simplicity of their lives. I enjoy working with my hands, and I love visiting with others. These are two of the things I always find in Amish novels.)
I am hopeful I'll get to shower before things really get rolling. The babies are still sleeping, but the bigger kids are up and getting breakfast. I'm looking forward to our Sabbath preparations and some time to rest this weekend. Thank you, Lord, for the peace that has descended on our house over the last day. Thank you for your endless help.

Sitting at the computer and holding a moaning baby, I wonder just how long this virus is going to last. The poor little ones have been sick for several days, Joel since Saturday and Josh since Monday. They are suffering from an intestinal virus that is violent. For long periods of time they just rest upon me moaning, suffering.
I am praying that God gives them quick recovery, and in the meantime, I am relying upon his grace to keep me joyful and positive. Things could always be much worse than they are. I am thankful that God has provided us with clean water to drink and doctors who are close. But even more so, I am thankful that God is with us. He has watched his own Son suffer. God is walking with me and He understands my needs. That I am trying to remember is my real comfort.

Good morning! After a rocky night of sleep, I am thankful to be up and getting ready for this coming Lord's Day. The roasts are already in the crockpot, and the bread is in the bread machine.
David and I have been trying to rekindle our celebration of a weekly Sabbath. This will be our third week in a row. In the past, this weekly time has been an incredible blessing to our family. I am praying that God will bless this time and that we will encounter Him in the next 24 hours.
One of the things I love most about celebrating a Sabbath is having time to enjoy my family. With no place to rush to and no work to be done, I am free to sit and be with my kids and husband. We have time to read and play games. We have time for naps and listening to music. It is simply delightful. I am excited to think what this Sabbath day will bring.

Anyone up for some science? After a year of being home almost nonstop with our babies, today I braved the Science Center. Yes, by myself, I took all five of my bambinos. This is momentous to me because I have been very intimidated to take the twins anywhere by myself. When I have attempted it, I usually came home with the feeling that I wasn't ready for that! But today, we had a delightful time. The babies were cooperative and engaged. They loved the water table and the ball play. At the same time, Isaiah and Nathaniel are old enough to do a little exploring by themselves. They waited to ride the simulator while I changed wet babies...I mean absolutely, thoroughly soaked babies. The whole day was enjoyable. I'm starting to see light at the end of this long tunnel!

What a beautiful day! I love the sunshine and warmer weather. It gives me hope that spring is only weeks away.
Today we baked the best wheat bread. It was so light and moist, the perfect loaf. That hasn't happened in a long time. Tonight we'll be staying home and enjoying some left overs. Isaiah has a part in a play at church for Ash Wednesday. He'll be representing the whole brood.
Well, music lessons await us. Just wanted to check in. Hope your day is blessed!

Crying. I hear it coming through the monitor, so I know this note will be short. Last night, God blessed me with a full night of sleep. After going to bed at 9:30 p.m., I awoke rested. I enjoyed the stillness of the morning.
This afternoon, Isaiah and I had a special date. We had lunch at Abay, the Ethiopian restaraunt in our neighborhood. Eating the pancake bread with our fingers and tasting the spicy food was especially enjoyable for just the two of us. It isn't often we get out alone.
I'm feeling like I have a little head cold. My ears seem, well, not right. I feel a little sleepy. Hopefully, I'll have energy to make dinner. If not, spagetti might be our meal.
Well, I'm off to end the crying. I'm looking forward to holding those sweet little boys.

Last night was a very difficult night. The babies slept very poorly, and now my eyes are droopy and my mind cloudy. I had all kinds of thoughts about the weekend that I wanted to share, but alas, I am just not able. Maybe tomorrow. For now, I am going to try and post a few pictures from Friday night. Pray that tonight we get better rest.

As idyllic as I'd like to pretend my life is, there are weeks where man's sinful nature is so evident in this home! My children have been driving me batty the last few days with bickering and arguing all day long! There are moments I'd like to lock them all up seperately each in their own tower like Rapunzel.
Seriously, sometimes it is so difficult to teach my children about selflessness and caring for one another. It goes against everything they are naturally inclined to do. They sometimes seem to thrive on causing discord and rousing each other's anger. All the while, I feel my own blood start to boil. No matter how often I correct them, how well I reason with them, their natural inclinations seem to be victorious.
I'm sure that in God's sight I am a lot like my children. I know what is right, and yet, to actually do what is right goes against everything I feel naturally. To live disciplined, to have patience, to be long-suffering, to be kind, all these things take incredible work. In the moments that my children are at their worst, I am inclined to be annoyed and easily angered. I don't like to be disturbed. I don't like that there behavior is outside of my control. I'm sure that God desires me to put aside my own selfish motives and to care about my children's spirits and their relationships with one another and God. If only I could keep that sentiment in the forefront of my thoughts. God help me. Help me to lead by example.

Looking out of my window, I see snow whirling about. Winter is not over. Though the cawing of crows reminds me that soon their noise will be replaced by the beautiful songs of spring birds, for now, spring is still a moment away.
I stand by the door and watch David walk to his car, making tracks in the snow. I am thankful. Standing there, I think about how dear he is to me, a cherished friend. My husband loves me, and I have full confidence in that. He is off to breakfast with some friends. David is loyal and thoughtful. I am blessed to have married him.
Soon, I will walk up the stairs in the quiet of the morning and rouse my oldest son. Isaiah will look up at me with his big blue eyes, eyes that insist they really want more sleep. He will pause and take a few minutes to wake, then he will tumble out of bed and get ready for the day. After a breakfast of cereal or oatmeal, he'll join me to get the school day started while the rest of the brood drinks in more rest.
Now, though, I am here alone with my thoughts. I relish the time alone. I soak up the quiet and breathe deeply. I do not take forgranted this precious time, while I also anticipate another wonderful day with the five little blessings God has given me. Today, I hope I pass the day with thanksgiving, aware of the many ways God has enriched my life. Make me mindful, Lord.

Today was a plug along kind of day. We are over half way through our school year, though we have another 70 days or so. Isaiah has some days where he is entirely distracted and needs refocusing all morning. He didn't actually finish his work until 3:30 this afternoon.
I went to the gym today. It's so nice to see church family in the middle of the day. I am so very sore from time spent working on my abs. I am hoping to strengthen my lower back, so hopefully the soreness is worth it. When I left the gym, it was raining. I had a refreshing walk home.
This evening, we watched a movie called Keeping the Promise, a pioneer film with Native Americans, wilderness, and a boy coming of age. The kids seemed to enjoy it.
Now, I'm signing off for the night. My eyes are heavy and my body relaxed. I am ready for a good night of sleep. Blessings to all.

It's still quiet here this morning. I wish I could say as much for the middle of the night. Joel was up again around 3 a.m. and he cried for over an hour. I was trying to let him cry it out, so that he might finally start sleeping all night again. Around 4:30 a.m., I went in to comfort him. As soon as I picked him up, he lay his head on me and was silent. I held him close for a few minutes then I laid him back in his bed. The wail he let out informed me he thought I was the worst kind of traitor. He cried for five more minutes then all went silent.
My mind is so tired from these broken nights of sleep. I tried to read today, and it took all my extra brain cells just to read the words. Reflection was not even a possibility. I am hopeful that tonight I'll get a full night of sleep and be much relieved tomorrow. I might also plan on a little nap myself this afternoon.
This week we are concluding our study of Africa. Today we'll be measuring out ribbon to see how tall an elephant really is and how big their tusks are. We'll be picking up our weights to feel how heavy an elephants brain is (10 lbs.) as well as a human brain ( a mere 3 lbs.). It should be a hands on day in science...my favorite kind.

FOR TODAY (February 16, 2009)…
Outside my window… gray light, the sun is just rising under the clouds.
I am thinking… about the week and what I really want my kids to learn, kindness, selflessness, compassion
I am thankful for… my morning cup of tea and especially my quiet time.
From the learning room…President's Day...thoughts about Abraham Lincoln.
From the kitchen… so much to make today, meatballs, quiches, minestrone, rice...
I am wearing… Pajamas and my robe.
I am creating… Sabbath space in my life.
I am going… to be home all day.
I am reading… Making Sunday Special by Karen Mains
I am hoping… that Joel and Josh will sleep all night tonight...no 3 a.m. visits.
I am hearing… the heat kick on and the soft motor of the computer.
Around the house… books and toys.
A few plans for the rest of the week: exercise, clean, read, finish my scarf
Here is a picture thought I am sharing… can't seem to get the photo button to work. Oh well.

This morning, my eyes are tired. I had a hard time making it out of bed, but here I am. Our plan today is to travel to Waynesburg for a Valentines Day party. This will be our opportunity to meet some other homeschool families there. Yesterday, we made heart cookies to take along with us.
Last night, when I was putting the children to bed, Eliza was quite amusing. As we were praying, she wanted to tell Satan off. So, she said, "Satan, you told me to do all bad things today, but I only did some bad things, ha ha." She spoke with such victory. It was very funny.
Well, my coffee is now brewed. The smell is wonderful. Off to read.

I only have a moment to write. Our dishwasher is on the fritz, and I have to hand wash before the kids get up.
This morning, I spent some time reading 2 Corinthians 2. I was taken with the passage on forgiveness. It made me think about my own responses to my children's sin. Am I grieved for their sin? Am I sorrowed because they have hurt their relationship with others and especially with God?
Thinking about this, I hope that today, as I discipline and instruct them that I will have always before me their walk with God. I pray that I will emphasize how their sin keeps them from a right relationship with their Maker. And I pray that I will have the courage to discipline them even when it is inconvenient or painful, so that they might know forgivenss and a reaffirmation of my love for them.
